"O presidente mais popular na terra" - Talvez este título específico teria sido melhor como "O político mais populista na terra" (Newsweek Sept/22nd edição on
line, veja aqui o artigo original publicado
na revista Newsweek).
A aceitação esmagadora de Lula não significa que seu trabalho como presidente seja
muito bem feito, significa que a maioria da população tem um sentimento de identidade com ele. Sem dúvida, Lula sofreu os horrores da extrema pobreza, como milhões de brasileiros, no entanto isso não significa que as suas políticas populistas irão realmente melhorar
a qualidade de vida dos pobres no Brasil.
Junte: a) uma pessoa carismática que fala tão mal como a maioria dos eleitores brasileiros, que tiveram dificuldade para ir à escola sem nenhuma chance de uma melhor educação; b) mais políticas populistas com a única intenção de obter aplausos e votos. O resultado serão altos níveis de aceitação de grande parte da população, mas sem credibilidade! A credibilidade do presidente Lula não garante sequer o apoio para candidatos
a presidência de seu grupo político. Muito pelo contrário, qualquer candidato a quem ele dá
apoio tem pouca aceitação. Por quê? Por que Lula não consegue encontrar um caminho para a continuidade do seu grupo histórico na Presidência?
Depois de ler o artigo completo na revista Newsweek, que é muito esclarecedor e dá bastante chance para a diversidade de opiniões, fiquei mais aliviado do subtítulo chocante, dizendo que Lula teria "feito um trabalho espectacular como o presidente do Brasil ". Esta frase me fez pensar sobre os sentidos que a palavra "espetacular" pode ter, e quais desses sentidos da palavra que o autor pretendia atribuir a Lula.
A pergunta que poderia ter sido melhor respondida, de forma mais clara, no texto da revista americana, que certamente deixou o presidente lisonjeado, é se o Brasil tem crescido por causa das políticas do Governo Federal ou apesar delas.
O fato do Brasil ter resistido muito bem à crise gerada pela bolha financeira no mercado imobiliário dos E.U.A., é que aqui temos nossa própria bolha particular, que funcionou como uma válvula de escape para alguns dos capitais especulativos que fugiram dos Estados Unidos, onde já não tinham uma função, e de outros países profundamente abalados pela crise.
Casos históricos de corrupção, quebra de tratados internacionais, o aumento de impostos acima da inflação, os gastos imprudente do dinheiro dos contribuintes, a manipulação de fundos de pensão para influenciar o mercado de ações,
escutas telefônicas por todo o país, o enriquecimento inexplicável de algumas empresas “escolhidas", entre outras situações escandalosas, vão melhor sob o título de "populista" do que sob o título de "popular".

“The most popular presidente on earth” - Maybe this specific title would have been better as "The Most Populist Politician on Earth" (Newsweek Sept/22nd on-line edition - see the original article published on

The overwhelming acceptance to Lula does not really mean his job has been well done, it means most of the population has a feeling of identity to him. No doubt Lula has suffered the horrors of extreme poverty,
like millions of Brazilians, however that does not mean his populist policies are really improving the life standards of the poor in Brazil.
Put together: a charismatic person that speaks just as wrongly as most Brazilian voters, who had difficulty to go to school and had no chances of a better education, plus blunt populist policies made with the sole intention of grabbing applauses and votes; the result is high levels of acceptance from great part of the population, but with no credibility! Lula’s credibility does not give enough support to any of the candidates
to president coming from his political group. Quite the contrary, any candidate he gives support flunks. Why? Why can’t Lula find a way for the continuity of his group in the Presidency?
After reading the complete article on Newsweek, which is very clarifying and gives plenty of chance for the diversity of opinions, it relieved me a little bit from the shocking secondary title, under the headline, saying Mr. Lula has “done a spectacular job as Brazil's president”, it made me think of the senses the word “spectacular” may have, and which of these senses on the word you intended to attribute to Mr. Lula.
The question that could have been risen more clearly on your text, that has sure left Mr. Lula flattered, is whether Brazil has grown because of the Federal Government policies or despite of them.
The fact that this country has resisted so well to the crisis generated by the financial bubble of the USA’s real estate market is that it has its own particular bubble that worked as a scape valve for some of the fleeing speculative capital, that no longer had a function in the USA and other countries deeply shaken by the crisis.
Historical cases of corruption, breaking of international treaties, the increase of taxes above inflation and other rates, reckless spending of taxpayer’s money, the manipulation of pension funds to influence the stock market, the tapping of phones all across the nation, the unexplained enrichment of some “chosen” companies, among other scandalous situations would sure go better under “populist” than under “popular”.
